Adult Education Programs

We hope to see you in the gardens this season! Our adult programming offers everything from gardening, of course, to photography.

Vegetable Garden 101::Carol Dahms- Saturday, February 23, 9:00 a.m.
Join us and get ready for the season. This workshop is intended for those who have never had a vegetable garden or have tried with little success.   We will cover topics such as choosing a site, soil conditions, preparing the site, what to plant, care of the garden, harvest and fall tasks.
The workshop will be held in the Welcome Center located next to the parking lot.

Hanging Orbs and String Gardens::Billie Hemmer and/or Stephanie Witte, May 7, 6:00 p.m.
Make and take either a hanging orb with succulents or a string garden using tropical plants. These lovely creations can hang in your house or on your patio.   Plant material provided by UNI Botanical Center.  Class Limit: 10

Shade Gardening::Maurine Crisp, May 14, 6:00 p.m.
Learn about plants that can grow well in shady areas, and how to care for them.  Feel free to bring a lawn chair; if weather is nice, this class will be held in the Arboretum Hosta Garden.

Plant Trends::Heidi Tietz-DeSilva, May 21, 6:00 p.m.
Come and learn what’s hot in the world of gardening for this year.  Heidi will share the latest trends in garden design, colors, and containers as well new annuals and perennials on the market. Some of Heidi’s favorite plants will be available for sale after the class.

Photography::Kay Rewerts, May 28, 6:00 p.m.
Join us to explore photography in the gardens. We will focus on close-up photos with tips and tricks to help you improve your photos. We will also look at the ways you share those photos. If you do not have your own camera or smart phone, we have a few you may use during the class.  Class will be rescheduled in the event of rain.  Class Limit 10

Tree Tour::Paul Kammerdiner, June 4, 6:00 p.m.
After a brief overview of the Arboretum tree collections, this class will take an extensive walking educational tour of the trees on the Arboretum grounds.  Wear your walking shoes and bring a light lawn chair if you would like to sit for our breaks. To be held rain or shine.

Making Hypertufa Containers::Maurine Crisp, June 11, 6:00 p.m.
Back by popular demand!   Many Arboretum visitors have commented on the various shaped containers of succulents outside the Education Center, and requested that our prior class on how to make these containers be repeated.   These pots are lighter weight than terra cotta and slightly porous.  Wear old clothes and bring rubber gloves if you wish. Class Limit 10
